The legal drinking age drives students and teenagers into participating in off-road or private drinking behaviors. As long as parents do not care to police their offspring or positively affect their values, the law is irrelevant. Fatalities due to underage drinking will occur as long as drinking in an of itself is practiced as a recreational pastime. The problem with alcohol, especially on college campuses, is as a whole our society views alcohol as something that makes you mature. At 18 years old, you can buy and own a firearm, you can be drafted into the military, you can smoke cigarettes, yet you cant drink a beer. In cities you cant look anywhere without seeing a beer advertisement. Its a part of our society. Why make the legal drinking age 21, with the drinking age older than being seen as an adult makes alcohol seem like its something that you have to be more than an adult to drink.

"Just like during national Prohibition, the law has pushed and forced underage drinking and youthful drinking underground, where we have no control over it," said David J. Hanson, an alcohol policy expert at the State University of New York-Potsdam.
